I Am Alive Wants to be Assassin's Creed Blended With The Road

The only thing that is likely to surprise you about Rockstar’s 10th-anniversary conversion of defining open-world classic Grand Theft Auto III is that it exists. A proper portable rendition of GTA has seemed an impossible dream since the pre-GTAIII days, when the older games in the series appeared in chopped-down form on Game Boy Color. Even the PSP games, slick as they were, felt compromised. But now here’s GTAIII, complete, just as you remember it, on iPad.

In some ways, it’s better than you remember it, as Rockstar has tweaked the graphics to run at full iPad resolution. The textures don’t seem to have been touched much, so it’s still kind of smeary, but it does the trick. Such fidelity comes at a price, though: GTAIII will only run on A5-powered iOS devices (specifically, iPad 2 and iPhone 4S — Siri, find me an all-weapons cheat code) and “certain Android devices.”
